3 Ways for a Restaurant to Rise Business on Facebook

Recently I was helping my boss of the restaurant for his online business. He asked me to apply for a facebook account for the restaurant and begin to run it.  Though his restaurant is full of customers every day, I am still happy to offer some help. Social media is getting into every little part of lives, and there is no reason if we ignore the part on food.

How to rise business for a restaurant through Facebook? After some small research, I give three methods, hopefully it gonna be helpful:

1. Give discount or bonus card to your fans. I know this is not easy for a small budget restaurant, but no one in this world dont like free gifts. In order to attract more customers on facebook while encourage them to consume, a printable voucher image could be uploaded to facebook page, and let your fans print it and come for a dinner. Remember, Only for fans !

2. Give other information than  something solely about restaurant itself. For example, give valuable information on food itself. “What kind of food could help you lose weight?” “What kind of fruit is good for breakfast?” etc. Specific information on specific  restaurant is nice to post too. You can share article as how to make sushi for Japanese restaurant, share information about the history of Chinese dumplings for Chinese restaurant. They should be intereting enough to read.

3. Stories behind the scene. I remember when I was in China, McDonald once had an activity is to visit their kitchen. They opened their kitchen at specific time per week to welcome customers. An open kitchen proves a clean enviroment, no matter for junk food or healthy food. Thus, it will attract customers’ attention if there are some pictures about the kitchen, about how the kitchen cooks a specific dish, how the chef shopped the fish etc.

A Basic Social Media Plan for Fashion Industry

Social Media is impacting every industry including Fashion.  Social media sites are becoming an important platform for fashion brands to not only communicate with customers, but also promote business directly.

Facebook and Twitter are the most popular social plugins that can be found through fashion industry websites, and they have even become the first place to show their new trend . Thus, how to make use of facebook and twitter is essential for fashion labels to make social media plan at first.

1. Set up an official account for your fashion lable in both Facebook and Twitter. As the most popular social network sites, they can attract most customers amongst all. Fluently statue update is a must. Daily statues must include all information that your potential customers might interested in. For example: the start of sale, new pieces for new season, special offer etc.

2.Put  “Like” button in a proper place. “Like” button is a connection to your network. Your friends can see what you like and then this “like” will possibly spread amongst your friends, and your friends’ friends. For fashion companies it is good if “like” appears in the homepage of wesbite, however, I deem that it is better if it could be shown up below specific pieces. Therefore, it is more likely to promote productions.

3. Online competition and “Tag”. If an online competition is successful enough, it will double the number of fans. The most vital element for a successful online competition relies on bonus and creativity, one thing bare in mind is that trying to involve as many fans as you can. Topic like “what am i wearing today” is always interesting for fashion lovers. Let your fans wear your pieces, upload pictures, and then tag them. Give some bonus or vouchers for the fan who receive most votes from others.

Besides these three basic actions,  Mutual Communication should not be forgotten. When you have no idea what to update,  just communicate with your fans online. Read their replies and trying to respond, especially when they ask you something, please give an answer. Asking some questions online is also a good choice, it will encourage  your followers and fans take part in.

For social media plans these are the most basic ways. Different companies must have different marketing plans depending on different customers and goals. Social media is the best place for you to know your audience. It is always easier said than done, so before making an online marketing plan, you still have to do much research.

Social Media Relationship

Although online social network sites exist virtually, the relationship amongst people in this social network are not virtual, since we all use real names to communicate and share through social media platform. There is always a debate on the social media relationship, some people are wondering if it is true that relationship through social media network could help people to increase their real relationship. According to some relevant research, most people think in fact the social media relationship is just a bubble thing.

However, there is indeed something people are concern about when using social media. Especially after we begin to be friends with people we dont really know but need to be tied with. If you are friends with business partners or your boss, you will begin to care about your personal life, making sure that only proper pictures be uploaded and tagged. No matter how tough a day you have spent in the office, blaming it though facebook and twitter needs to be considered again and again.

It is also claimed that social media is becoming a testing tool for employers to check on their applicants. They can easily discover how their applicants really are through their personal profile, online statues and friends. This is also a problem that GOOGLE+ tries to figure out, so they have the circle function to help netizens protect their personal informations.

Social media relationship is different than that in reality. Communication in reality is always face to face, or through telephones in which way you can always hear each other’s voice. But on social media it is all about information deliveries. To some extend, a birthday wish on friend’s wall could really make them feel good, however, some research shows that the number of real close friends through social media is no more than 5.

Besides, social media is changing the relationship. You cannot help campare yourselves with others since every time you log in social media sites, since all information are about your friends. Of course there will come some pressure, no matter for job compare or life compare, especially while you are in a hard situation. At the same time, if you are critical or rude on social media, which might damage your brand and how people view you.

Fashion and Social Media

Social media influences our lives with no doubt. Personally, I am a huge fashion fan so i am really interested to discover that how social media changes the fashion industry. It looks like every thing happens during one night that not matter big or small, a large number of fashion brands have their social media platforms.

Every time we gets into the fashion company’s website,we will easily find the facebook and twitter logo. If we join their fan page or follow them on twitter, we can be kept updating on their latest fashion new pieces or sales. Thus, social media platform firstly becomes a good way for fashion company to promote their business, especially for online shopping.

Today when I logged on facebook, i found that one of my favorite high street brands “Pull & Bear” will start their online shopping website from tomorrow. I cannot help share this news with my friends right away. If there is no social media, customers will probably receive the news from websites or retail shops, which is a  far more slow way.

“Sale” season is alway attractive to customers, and social media become the tool to “spread the word”. A lot of fashion companies change their profile picture into “sale” posters to anounce that their “sale” is on sail.  It turns out that, the more people are in their social media network, the more business they will earn eventually. The more followers they have, the more active will their activities be.

Social media also is a platform for mutual communication. Having a way to communicate with customers, let them take the action provides a perfect way for fashion company to get tied with their customers. From the communication on social media, fashion company could know whether their first autumn coat is liked, whether their new color has received nice opinion etc. from public.

Generaly speaking, social media is the best online promotion tool for fashion companies, it helps on their online shopping, sale and communication with customers.

Guide to Win Social Media Online Contest (Day 29)

There are so many online contests going on nowadays, and Facebook is the main platform for people to “Like”. Generally the online contest is more about winning votes. And the contest  which Mr.D participated two weeks ago continues, until now we have won 80+ votes, definitely on the  first place amongst all competitors.

This is a nice result we would like see, not only for the VIP party tickets we will receive as the winner, but also for “winning an online contest on social media”.

Hereby I would like to share my methods with you, they are short, easy, but very useful.

  1. Personal E-mails and Messages. I have to admit that people who receive your mail and messages will probably consider it is a spam, and they won’t take any actions on that. So the best way is try not to make your mails look like a spam. A lot of spam letters start with “hey dear could you please…”, and you have to avoid this beginning. Just calm down, take a deep breath, and write a sincerely clearly and persuasive letter. Make sure your friends will listen to you and help you win.
  2. Bonus. There is no one in the world dislikes bonus. Though I didn’t point this out on Mr.D’s contest, but it really works. If you are a company which has enough money to offer  some free gifts, please do this. In fact you don’t have to make every one get something, you can set limited number of big prize for random people. And for netizens, only a “click” really makes a good deal.
  3. Make use of your network.  We all know that in order to win an online contest, first thing we should start from our network. At least there are some basic things we should do:  posting on your walls, creating an events to gather all of your friends do the voting, talking to your friends who is online, tweet your contest…
  4. Buy Votes.  There are some people online who sell votes. I am not sure about the price, but if this voting is really extremely important to you, you can do it, why not? If they can make you win!
  5. Facebook platform. There are some interesting groups in facebook like “50 likes or votes” , “contests exchange votes/likes“, you can post the your contest and ask for more people to vote for you. But remember, before you are waiting for more votes, please be an active voter yourself. Go to people’s contest on this page and vote for them, after voting, tell them you are done!
Plus, there are still more ways to use for online contest. You can always choose the best way that you like. But there are two things I wan you to know:
  1. Don’t believe in forum so much. I have tried some alleged forums, but too bad that no one responded me. I think probably is because it is not that convenient for people to move from current forum to another social media site, besides, the discussion in one forum always changes so fast, maybe only ten minutes later, no one could notice your contest anymore.
  2. Don’t leave comments on your own contest. Facebook is really good at tracking your footprints. No matter there are how many people vote for you, once you leave a comments, all of them will get a notification from Facebook, which could be annoying to some extend. It could leads to an “unlike”  result.

Privacy of Social Network? (Day 28)

Recently, the Chinese social network is getting quite interesting. The Chinese Twitter (Weibo) exposed some private issues on political sides.

For example, a local officer who talked with his lover through his account got caught by the policemen, and things turned out that he was corrupted. Meanwhile, a young lady who claimed that she was a daughter of the CEO of Chinese Red Cross while uploaded a lot of pictures of luxuries on her Weibo page. Since it caught public’s attention, relevant government departments began to investigate this person and it turned out that the whole Chinese Red Cross organization is even corrupted.

This is so true but sad. The true side is that finally China has something could be talked about on social network issues, the sad side is that China has a terrible corruption situation while the privacy of social network needs to be thought about.

In fact, I am good at spying someone on Facebook. Though for the first time when I registered Facebook, I was hesitated that do I really have to put my real name on this site? Will there be something bad happen if my profile was public like this? However, it seems that no one really cares, since real names and information could help us to find our friends and keep our relationship in our circles.

There are some privacy settings on social media account for sure, and Facebook is claimed as the safest social media sites. However, there are still some problems like you can know a person by looking at his friend list.

Netizens could always make them as private as they can: block the wall, make no one see the profiles etc. But with the development of social network site itself, sometimes the site could not help itself to spread the word. One day I made a new friend on a party, the next day we added each other on Facebook. Then on his wall, Facebook stated: “XXX and Cici are now friends after attending XXX party”… I was embarrassed, hoping no one could see this.

However, facebook and twitter are two different social media network sites. On twitter we don’t have to use our real name and know all information about our friends, instead we can only receive information from people we want to know. But on Twitter, every one could get information from you even they are not your followers.

Privacy is a question that I have no idea how to answer , since I have lots of doubts myself. But social media helps you know a person more to some extend. By watching picture albums, I can see how many places this person has been, by watching his statues, I can see what his life is going recently. Social media shortens our distance.

Is it possible that Facebook could help a policeman catch the criminal? Is it possible that my boss could fire me just because a drunk face? Sometimes I even feel I am living out of this world is I don’t log on Facebook even for a day.

Facebook “Likes” and Twitter “Follows” (Day 24)

Social media networking has already become an indivisible part of our daily lives. I cannot help wondering what ways did bloggers use to advertise themselves a few year ago when Facebook and Twitter were not widely used.  With an increasing popularity, nowadays, Facebook “Like” and Twitter “Follow” buttons are a”MUST” for bloggers to promote blogs. Besides bloggers, organizations, hotels, clubs, big companies etc. are aslo seriously relying on these two small buttons to connect with fans.

Maybe for us, normal netizens, “like” and “follow” is just a “click” , but in fact they are very important for companies. There is a big power behind buttons. The number of how many “likes” and how many “follows”could demonstrate what interests are in audience. And a big audience makes a company easily to beat their competitors.

Social network is a global network, Facebook and Twitter could even be treated as the biggest online traffic booster. And there is indeed some investigations going on on the traffic data of social media. It is said that there are 22% more pages for Facebook users to browse, and the traffic increase more than 3 times trough Facebook buttons.

One day after attending a party with awesome music, I liked the page of this party organization on Facebook, then continually I began to receive new parties from this organizations. Since it is always fun to hang out with friends in the weekend for wonderful parties, I am never tired of receiving news feed from them. Thus, I think the “like” and “follow” buttons are in fact positive for both sides: companies and fans.

Not only companies could earn merits, but it is also convenient for fans to get their interested information. Companies can know more about their audience, audience can be better informed. The “Likes” follows the rule of development of social media : social and easy. Plus, humans like giving kudos.(for more information, please read here)

We also say that internet is a virtual world, however, “likes” and “follows” are virtual “kudos” but not virtual relationships. “Followers”  stands a real relationship between you and your followers, and it all about real people and real relations. Remember what did Gary say before? We must interact with our followers and we have to talk to them.

“Followers” are real people.  Besides the fact that some of them are “follow psychos”, most of them are showing their interests, and hope you could follow them back.  There are some methods on what to do with Twitter followers, and I think am really bad at it.

Some people are looking down on the important side of “followers” as me, but it turns out that keeping relationship with followers is important for online promotion, otherwise no one will care about you anymore. I do believe that the communication with followers also means a lot for the social media marketing too. Keep updating and asking questions could help keeping followers informed and let them participate in a small social network.

“Likes” and “Follows” goes viral.

Social Media Viral Marketing (Day 23)

In fact, Viral Marketing actually has a lot of names. You probably feel a bit strange with the phrase, but your must have heard one of its other terms, like “Word of mouth“, like “Buzz marketing”. Shortly, it is a social media marketing strategy. As the original “viral” meaning, the social media campaign is spread in a large number of people: be talked about, be shared, be concerned…be passed from one person to another one without paid media. And viral marketing will bring bigger promotion and make better profit.

It is said that E-mail is the basic strategy for viral marketing, since E-Mail encourages people to forward information. With the development of social media, we have more and more platform to do viral Marketings. Especially for Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube. There are lots of forms for Viral Marketing: advergames, video clip, ebooks, interactive flash etc. And no matter in what way, the purpose is to GO VIRAL.

There are some discussions on the difference between Viral marketing and Social Marketing. Personally I think the former is more about “spread” and “profit”. Viral marketing increases traffic and attracts people through social media platforms, let netizens spread the word in order to promote a specific production or a brand while spends least money.

It is even not hard to discover that, when referring to viral marketing, not only big companies could win most profits, because of the low-paid features, a lot of small companies could also achieve success. It is universe acknowledged that money makes the world go round. The most important reason why people use Viral marketing is because it could make the biggest profit with lowest cost. And it really works!

How to do a successful viral marketing? Besides some vital elements that I have talked about on social media campaign in past articles, I do believe marketers should focus on the real value,  try to make the campaign creative, entertaining enough so that netizens would like to spread. Thus, the viral marketing is not only about a competition on social media sharing , but also about a competition on “brainstorm”.

Google+ and Google’s Social Media Network (Day 22)

Today is the Independence Day of USA. It is also a rare nice sunny day for amsterdam . However, it seems that “Google+” hit the headline in every media. One of my colleague asked if someone had the “Google+” invitation, and it is a shame that none of us has received the confirm letter from Google. We are all eager to join this “New” social media network.

What is Google+? Generally speaking, it is a social media network, and in fact this social media network is really closed to “Facebook“, which we are all familiar with. Since the moment when Google+ was born,  it is being widely compared with Facebook.  For me, it is a bit weird to use Google to interact with friends,  since it is already powerful enough for people to obtain all kinds of information as the most popular search engine. Besides, Facebook is involving a larger population, and becoming more and more integrated, who really wants to quit Facebook?

But this is not the first time for Google to develop its social media network site. Unfortunately, most social media productions by Google before were not successful. Here is a clear picture of the history of Google’s social media:

As far as I have discovered,  Google’s social media network has achieved  some success to some extend in specific countries.  Like the site Orkut, until the year of 2011, nearly 85% of Orkut users are from Brazil and India.  Friendster, which is considered as the “grandpa” of social media network is one of the most popular sites in Asian countries.

From this picture, we can see that Google has tried different field to launch social media sites, but they have never been really globally grown. Though Google Buzz is a comparably more international and integrated social media site lately, it still made Google face an embarrassed situation. Apparently, Facebook is more convenient and welcomed by citizens.

However, Social Media itself is a developing industry with the development of technology and internet. Someday, there will be something replace Facebook. and the popularity of Facebook actually meet people’s demand in time. Thus, as the most smart search engine (which millions of people even cannot live without), Google reckons it is their time to do a big change on social media network, in order to crash Facebook and build a better social media network, Google+ was born.

Basically Google+ is similar as Facebook, as a recent launched it not only learns a lot of advantages from Facebook but also learns a lot of lessons from its unsuccessful sites before. One of the alleged best features of Google + is the circles.  It makes it more easier that friends are in different groups and circle, so your nightclubbing pictures won’t be seen by your boss if you share this in another circle.

Some people say that Google+ concerns much more on copyright things while Facebook is the co-owner of anything that users publish. But I don’t think this really makes sense, since in my past articles it is already concluded that the real copyrights don’t really exist.

Personally, I am really happy using Facebook right now.And I do believe that Facebook could keep improve itself and get better. Internet is a world of information without boundaries , Google plays an extremely role in this world without any doubt.Google already has a lot of good productions for us to use, like the Google Chrome, Google Map etc.

I always would like to say that I cannot live without Google , however, when Google+ came out, I am really  begin to worry that I will become a slave of Google, and the internet life won’t be fun at all.Plus, it is really troublesome for most of netizens to leave their current social media sites and start all connections again.

It has already been one week since I sent my email to Google+ to ask for an invitation. And now I still haven’t heard anything from them. This time Google+ is really careful to pick first users and check feedbacks to win social media networking market. But neither of them could occupied the whole world, because they both will miss one of the biggest internet market --China. Since Google search engine is kicked out from the mainland, and the Google+ won’t be accepted either. This is very hilarious. What the hell.

“Like” Madness for Social Media Marketing (Day 18)

It all happens in Facebook this time. A party organization (well, let’s just say this, it is much easier to understand ) called “Vrij Poppetje” holds an event on its Facebook fanpage, they took some picture for different people, and created an album, stating that the picture with most “likes” could win 12 VIP tickets for their big open air party in the south of Amsterdam, and tickets all will be given to the person in the picture.

Thus, people in those pictures are beginning to try their best to attract their friends or non-friends for a “Like” to win this competition. In fact this activity is none of my business. But surprisingly, Mr.D shows up in one of pictures, and  then unsurprisingly,  this becomes one of my tasks, I need to help him beat others!

“Help, Please ! ”  Many of my friends on Facebook or Email list received my “help” letter. Plus, I posted the link on my own wall, on walls of groups I am in, on walls of some other fanpage I joined. Even my teacher in my university saw this message and blamed that I am “mad”, well, by looking back at what I have done for this now, I think I was crazy too!

However, loads of questions come out.  Genrally speaking, I just need a “like”, which only takes 2 seconds, but it seems that people would rather surf internet for useless information than click a “Like”. Why is that?   And why there is a “Like”  competition only for party tickets?

Big profit lies behind “Like”.Firstly, you can not “like” this picture directly, so once people receive this link, they have no idea where is the “like” button. And the most important point  is that  the “like” button can only be shown unless you “like” this fanpage of Vrij Poppetje first, which means! And after this, your Facebook wall will keep updating latest information from Vrij Poppetje.

We all know how Facebook works. No matter for a note, a link, a picture, a statue, the more comments and likes they receive, the better rankings they will get. And usually “top news” is the first thing we see when we log in our Facebook. So far, Mr.D’s picture has received 30+ likes and some comments, so this picture probably will get a good ranking  in these 30+ people’s friends’ walls. Therefore, the number of people who saw this picture, or knew this organization will definitely much much much more than the numer of 30+.

The “like” competitions is one way of social media campaign, in fact it is a smart way too, because Vrij Poppetjes don’t have to spend one penny on this while competitors are the ones to do advertisement. Once they are famous, they can make more profits, and expand their business.

Hereby I would like to talk about people’s reactions after sending those annoying “help ” messages (I apologize!  I am really really sorry to bother you guys!). Besides my teacher’s complaining, most of them dislike this. I am sure if there is a “dislike” button, this picture is going to win! Because my message is so “unspecial”, they also think it is a spam. Facebook have lots of spams, and they create a scare for most netizens once they receive something that relates to “link” or “help”.

For friends who I am not very familiar with,  they just ignore this because of “spam”, but for friends who get along well with me, they even send me messages like “hi, are you okay? what is wrong with your account” etc., which is really kind-hearted and makes me feel so warm.

I am glad to see this picture has won most “like” so far, but the truth is most of them come from personal relation. I talked with friends who appear online, and then sent them the link to explain the whole situation, otherwise I am really not positive on the result. Thinking of these popular social media brands that I have discusses these couple of days, I really wish I was one of them. It is very sad to face the fact that I am a normal root-class netizen, both in internet and reality…

Here is the whole “like “madness story. I still hope Mr.D’s picture will win and I could get the party tickets. But wait, what is the prize for people who vote for me? I really have no idea, I am really sorry. But speaking of this, I believe that if there is a bonus gift for each netizen who “like”  this picture, millions of “like” will come easily!  We all want something! Maybe in the near future, when Vrij Poppetjes is big and popular enough, it will offer a “more expensive” way to run its social media campaign.

So please vote: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=140944955980759&set=a.140943892647532.36277.134096866665568&type=1&theater

This is not a spam! 😀
