Start a Blog for Yourself or Business: Top 10 Basics You Should Know!

Have a blog for yourself was the first thing I talked about when I started this blog. But it seems that I have never really specifically introduce how to start a blog…so in this article, I want to make it more in details. It is easier than you imagine, but there are still some basic knowledge you have to keep in mind.

1.  The Name of your Blog, and the Tagline

No matter you are a person or you will write for a business,  think of the name and tagline carefully before you start. Because it is hard for you to go back to revise it, and the most important is, the TAGLINE will be indexed by the search engine.

2. What to Blog?

The whole social media network is Share, Share and Share. Blog is a way to show yourself, and your product, so if you want to go viral, you need audience who would like to Share your content. “Content is the King”, as I always say. Blog something you are good at and interested in, so that you could at least write something worthy of share. If you love Fashion, love cooking, love traveling, love to watch Movies…go ahead and blog them!

3. Blogging Software

Find a blogging software which is easy to use. There are millions of blog website out there,but I personally suggest that you should find the one which suits your content most. Like in fashion blogosphere, most fashionistas prefer to blog through Blogger than WordPress…

4. URL

An important element to customize your blog.  You can also use it with your company’s domain together.

5. Layout

Simple and Easy is what I high recommend. You can always put beautiful images that reflect your topic, but the layout should still be clear. There are some blogs show up with awful text colors and crazy background, which won’t attract people to read.

6.  Links and Social Media pluggins.

Besides those basic SEO skills that I wrote in the last blog article, never ever forget building Links and add Social media pluggins to your blog. They are the keys for your blog to be exposed and shared.

7. Categorize your blog articles.

Never ignore the function of TAGs, while never ignore Categories. Categorize your blog articles, and you are very welcome to multi-categorize them. For example, this article I am writing can be categorized as Social Media Blog, while also Social Media Marketing…

8. Track your audience.

Most blogging software help you track where and how do your clicks come from. You can always found a clear chart on your dashboard to get to know your audience.

9. Comment Trackback

It is up to the author if they want people to comment on blogs…even though there are so much spam nowadays, it will never be wrong if you keep your comment open to audience, especially when you are blogging for your business…because you need to communicate with your consumers/potential consumers.  And be sure to trackback comments, so you will be notified when you audience reply to your message—-this means a great start of a conversation directly with your fans/consumers.


10. Comment on other blogs.

Another best way to attract audience and to run your blog better. You can start to comment on others’ blog even before your blog officially launched. Making friends with bloggers, knowing what they have been up to. Involve other blogs and bloggers are the best start to participate the online community.

Basic SEO skills for Blogging/Bloggers

It has been a long time since my blog updated last year :S Feel so sorry for it. However, my life has been some big changes, the biggest one is that I am living in New York City now.

From Europe to the United States, life keeps getting busy, and I also spend a lot of time doing my other work…Whatever, I am back to this ocean again and continue to contribue my researches on Social Media. Today I want to talk about some basic SEO skilling for blogging.

The other day one of my friends asked me if there were some methods for her blog to be found easily meanwhile she doesn’t want to spend too much time on blog promotion. It is true that online promotion always takes a long time, which really upsets people who living in a busy life. So hereby, I would like to give some basic SEO skills for bloggers: You can promote your blog while you are writing it!

  • Your Blog Title

You have to have an attractive blog title. “Attractive” here means “attractive” to searching engines other than you audience.  Before giving a title, please re-think: If I were a person who needs similar information, what kind of sentences or keywords will I search for?

It is not hard to discover that on searching engines result pages, blogs with easy, simple, direct titles come up first, for example “Five restaurant you should hang out in Manhattan,” Top Ten website similar as Ebay” etc.

Tips: use “HOW TO…”, “Top 5 (or10)…”, “The best XX…” title

  • Keyword Magic

Keyword is magic. Use keyword wisely please.

Use it in Titles. Tags. 

Mention them in your articles, but don’t mention it all the time. The best way is keyword should be brought up every 30 words or more. However, it varies too because some people deem that every 150 words or more.  It depends on your article. If your articles only has 300 words, then why not mention it more???


  • Links

Links links links. Links are important for SEO, that is why we say “link-building”.

I know for most people, sometimes it is troublesome to find related links (or related articles attached). The easiest way is use suggested links that provided by blog site itself. But you can also give links to big names: Brands, celebrities, popular words, country… Links help your popularity.


  • Bullets. Bold. Underline words

You must have found that almost in every article, I use bullet and bold words. I don’t really know the reason, but they help with the searching engine rankings! And it can help audience find the information they need faster.

SEO: Dofollow, Nofollow and Robots.txt (Day 63)

Last week, I had a basic test about SEO. And I found out that there are some words which are useful in SEO while confused me. I am not sure if you also have the same problem as me, but hereby i would like to make them more clear.

1. Nofollow and Dofollow 

“Nofollow” page is very  popular in SEO. Actually, “Nofollow” is a HTML page code. You can not see which page is “dofollow”or “nofollow” directly from the webpage until you view the page source.

Firstly let’s take a look at this, this is an example of Dofollow link:

<a href=""> Social Media Specialist's Blog</a>

And Nofollow link is like this:

<a href="" rel="nofollow">Social Media Specialist's Blog</a>

With the nofollow code, generally speaking ,a webpage cannot be shown in the index through search engine algorithm. In other words, if we want to stop some text link advertisements(which is shown on our blog or own page)to not be read by search engine, we can always put the nofollow code in. 2. Robots.txt and NoFollow.

Robots.txt is a text file, the format is like this:

# robots.txt for User-agent: * Disallow: /cyberworld/map/ # This is an infinite virtual URL space Disallow: /tmp/ # these will soon disappear Disallow: /foo.html

It is a text file you can edit and put in your website while Nofollow is a meta tag.  Robots.txt tell the search engine what in this page should be read or not.

Generally speaking ,the biggest difference between Robots.txt and Nofollow is that:

With Robots.txt, the search engine cannot crawl the page.

With Nofollow meta tag, the page is still crawlable, but in search engine’s index, this page is not shown, and there will be no out going links from that page, no pagerank flows either.

Link Building Technology (Day 55)

Link building is not only about links exchange. We write an e-mail to exchange out links with other websites is just a part of the the whole “link building” thing whilst link building is only a piece of all SEO puzzles. Besides, backlinks and internal links are both very important  elements for link building to consider. And some people even claim that internal links are more vital than backlinks.

Nowadays, there are lots of companies helping building links for clients. They are using both technological  software and social media platform to improve the link quality, attempting to increase the number of visitors, which is also the goal for most websites. Meanwhile, it is not hard to find some free or self-purchased link building software for personal use.

Google is the most popular searching engine in the world (except China), so for most SEO specialists, have a good knowledge of Google is helpful. Like the article I wrote about the copy-write before, sometimes google can tell the “canonical page” better than other pages so that original content could have a better ranking. And here is a helpful video from Matt Cutts , who gives “link building technology” a general idea based on Google searching engine.

Personally, I think Link Building technology is a door for people to get into the website, but if the website wants to a keep audience visiting frequently, link building strategy should be focused. Therefore, both of them are important to SEO. We cannot ignore the role that link building technology plays, while be sure to make a good link building strategy to help improve the rank page and page popularity.

Link building strategy is more creative than link building technology, since the latter has its rule to follow. However, they both help the website on searching engine.

Link Building Strategy (Day 52)

After knowing I am doing an intern in an SEO company, a lot of friends joke that I become a geek. In fact for most people, who heard of SEO before, deeming that this is a work with too much technology work. Because You have to know what kind of page with what kind of codes could be crawled better by searching engine. However, I never agree with the “geek” thing, though sometimes the ” rel=” ” “meta tags” etc. are really tedious.

Link-building is usually considered as an important “off-page” fact that relates to the ranking. And a successful link-building needs strategy too. First of all, we have to figure out how to build linking popularity. Search engines don’t crawl useless websites, and they care more about links from authorities websites  or websites which focus the same content as your website.

There are some basic ways to build link popularity,  the article “A Linking Campaign Pimer” is claimed as the oldest and the most famous method for link popularity improvement. You need to link other sites to your websites meanwhile asking them to link you back. The most simple way is that you can search for your keyword through the big searching engines firstly, then find the top website of the results and attempt to build link with them.

However, Building links is only one side. Another side is that the website should have attractive content, otherwise audience would not like to visit for a second time. There are five well-known link building strategies on this part,  and we do need to keep in mind that the content only alive until they are read by people.

In fact, building links strategy has much commons with the social media strategy. Because you have to target your audience, find where they are, you need to monitor the process and also concerns on the feedback. Link building is a long time programme, you need to be patient and focus on every detail.

What is Link Building? (Day 51)

It is not easy to explain Link Building in a short way, since here on my left hand, there is a huge book about this. And I have been spending a long time reading it.Generally speaking, link building is a process that you can enter different websites through a variety of methods, and then get one of  links linked to a page of your website. (short descrption)

But why we need Link Building?  First, we can get more and more traffic.  Visitors from other websites will be attracted to the website by clicking the link on other websites, once the website has various links,visitors are various too. Second, Link building helps the website win a better ranking on major searching engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing etc. Most people pick searching results which show up in the first ranking page, thus, a top pageranking is extremely essential.

About the relationship between Linke Building and Social Media, I have discussed before in previous blog articles.As I said, link building plays an important role in SEO, which helps different searching engine successfully crawl to a specific website. However, we cannot treat link building as a simple concept, plus, it doesn’t mean that the more links you have , the better ranking you obtain.

To win audience through social media needs a lot of work, same as link building. SEO is not only about building links. Some pages cannot be crawled, such as the robot.txt file. Pages with too many links are not recommended either with the fact that search engines tend to only crawl about 100 links on any given pages.

There are 7 link building mistakes you should avoid. However, these mistakes are just a small piece of the whole SEO that should pay attention to. Link building also has relevant technologies and strategies to support, which will be discussed further in next articles.

Link Building and Social Media (Day 10)

Unluckily, Mr.D didn’t show up today, after receiving his message about today’s assignment through mobile phone,  I spent a whole day acting like a zombie. Because I have lots of question marks in my head, wondering the topic today: social media and link building.

If we try to understand what is link building, Wikipedia will lead us to the page of “SEO(Search Engine Optimization)”, which has been briefly described in the first day’s blog article. But “link building” does not  mean SEO fully, but it is SEO’s trump card, it plays an important role in SEO.

Here comes a word called backlink , it generally means incoming links to a websites or a web page. This is very important, because inbound links could help websites or pages achieve higher rankings through the major searching engines, like Google, Bing, Yahoo etc. And that is what SEO talks about. Therefore, what “link building” doing exactly is to build links to websites and web pages in order to help them win more exposure on the internet. The more links have been built, the better the ranking will be, then more audience will come to visit.

But what is the relationship between link building and social media? I found many articles on the importance of social media ‘s part on link building strategies, the answer is s till blurry. Thanks to Mr.S (my another boss), when all staff went home leaving me alone behind in the office, he used a simple graph leads me walking out from the darkness. SEO and Social Media are separate conceptions, and link building, which belongs to the former doesn’t relates to social media either. But when they are together, they could promote the ranking of the websites or web pages.

Using social media as the platform for “link building” could help develop effective business relationships.  For example, if a website have a twitter account or facebook page, when it has more “likes” and more retweets, a bigger popularity could help the ranking of this website higher, which is also what “link building” do. A better ranking could attract more potential consumer so that the business will possible be promoted, more profits will be made. While a company is working hard on its SEO’s link building, social media should not be forgotten.

Social plugins become essential elements, because they lead netizens to a specific website or web page’s social media platform. In other words, if a website/web page want to attract more visitors, or be easier to be found, it have to be shared through social media. There is no doubt that every one is getting involved in the social network, no matter for business or personal promotions.

Facebook and Twitter  are the two biggest social media sites which always come first according to websites. Besides that there are also blogs, forums, RSS to use. In fact,on one hand, there are  many link building softwares and computer technologies help the SEO; on the other hand, link building is a link sharing between social media and netizens. The final purpose is to come out a better ranking on major searching engines.

Though there are a large number of ways to build link popularity, it is not only about adding a link then walk away. Interactions, communications, quality of websites are all vital elements, especially for social media. Because links are built for attracting audience. Unlike the old ways of promotion, audience is the one who really take actions. Link-building provides links, audiences spread them and make them be seen by more people.

Today is my last day of the second week. I am already shocked by the power of  Social media and how it changes the world. And I even begin to believe that social media could get rid of our selfishness.
